Tonkotsu Ramen with Pork Belly at Coco’s Ramen
After a much needed catch up session with my fellow #Ramenista on the east coast the other night, I naturally had a craving for some ramen the following day. A new ramen place popped up not too long ago close to my office so I decided to go ahead and give it a go. I went for a solo lunch, sat on a stool and basically housed a incredibly delicious bowl of ramen within 20 minutes. Check out the deats and reviews below!
The Broth: There were a few different options (tonkotsu, miso, etc.), but I always go for the tonkotsu first because of the richness and overall tastiness of the broth. Soooo glad I did because the broth was so flavorful but not too heavy as some tonkotsu broths tend to be. With everything in that bowl, the soup was insanely good at the end with porkiness, garlic, and a little kick because of the chili oil.
The Noodles: Just your regular run of the mill wavy ramen noodles. Nothing particularly special about them, but definitely nothing bad to say about them. They were cooked to the right texture where they weren’t too soft or too chewy.
The Meat: 2 pieces of chasu that were super tender and delish, cooked exactly how it should be to enhance the bowl of noodles.
The Toppings: So. Many. Thangs! I loved that they put some chili oil/flakes in there. Not a lot of ramen places do this, but i LOVED it. It gave the entire bowl of ramen an extra little kick to it. The other amazing topping, black garlic oil (insert praise emoji here) - my god do i love this stuff. It gives the broth an awesome garlicky taste and just brings out that umami that we all love. There was also half an egg, which is a huge part of the ramen for me. This one wasn’t exactly hard boiled or soft boiled, it was a bit of an in betweener. I typically like the soft boiled eggs that ooze :). Other toppings were the usual scallions, corn, and bamboo (which I typically HATE, but they tasted okay this time).
Price: Regularly priced at ~$10 or so. With tip and everything I left there with a full happy belly and only $12 less out of my pocket!
8.5/10 slurps for this bowl! The chili oil and black garlic oil just killed it for me on this one. Knowing that this place is so close to my office is actually super dangerous now. I’ll probably be frequenting this place to the point where I’ll have my own seat ready for me at the end of the bar :)
Till the next bowl of ramen!
The other night, some friends and I went to this new ramen place that I’ve been wanting to try. Kaiju Eats isn’t like your traditional type of ramen place. All of their ramen is very modern with so many different flavors and ingredients. I had the K.O. Ramen and yup, the name was definitely appropriate because it was a knock out and .. it knocks you out. Here goes the review!
The Broth: The broth was a suuuuuper tasty tonkotsu broth. The broth was heavier in flavor and thicket, as tonkotsu broths typically are. As a soup lover myself, I obviously made sure that I had every last drop.
The Noodles: The noodles were the wavier kind and complimented everything just perfectly. The noodles were able to soak up all of the broth and fatty goodness from the meat toppings :)
The Meat(s): THE. MEATS. This ramen didn’t have your typical chasu, like traditional ramen does. Like I said earlier, if you’re looking for a bowl of traditional ramen, this probably won’t be the right place to cure the craving. This ramen had meatballs, ribs, AND pork belly. Yup, all THREE. Like I said, this ramen was perfectly named. Never had a ramen that all of those and each one of them were equally amazing. All of the meats were tasty and delicious when in the tonkotsu broth.
The Toppings: PANKO CRUSTED EGG! So the panko crusted egg actually doesn’t come with this bowl of ramen, but I saw it on the menu and HAD to have it because … well, come on. The waiter thought I was crazy, mainly because I didn’t realize that the ramen already came with an egg :). Other toppings included some scallions and delicious black garlic.
Price: The price is pretty reasonable at $11 considering all of the meat that you get in that bowl! Normally you get 2 pieces of chasu in your bowl of ramen, but in this one you get so much more.
Definitely will be returning to Kaiju to try their other ramens especially because they’re supposed to change their menu every once in a while.
